Ariège, from prehistory to the present day

Many traces of time are still present in our beautiful region. Follow in the footsteps of prehistory, discovering the drawings of the cave of Niaux, visiting the cave of Bedeilhac or the cave of Mas d'Azil. The Prehistoric Park will complete your trip with its many workshops and exhibitions. And to discover more geological sights, venture on the boats of the underground river of Labouiche or visit the cave of Lombrives.
Then, discover the trades, techniques and tools of the past by visiting Les Forges de Pyrène.
Many remains of the Cathar castles are still visible to us, from the famous castle of Montsegur to the castle of Roquefixade, the castle of Lordat, so many beautiful walks with a historical backdrop.
The medieval city of Mirepoix, its half-timbered houses on wooden galleries, its "Maison des Consuls" and its cathedral also make it a stop rich in discoveries.

Ariège on foot

In the heart of the Ariège Pyrenees, there are many possibilities to spend time and discover the surrounding nature, and hiking is undoubtedly the best known.
From Foix, and as a warm up, walk up to the Terrasses du Pech (opposite the hotel) to observe the city from above, or even from the Saint-Sauveur, the view will not disappoint you.
As soon as the fine weather arrives, let yourself be seduced by the surrounding peaks and set off to conquer the high-altitude lakes. The Lac de Montbel, the Lac de Bethmale or the Etang de Lers, accessible by car, will be the perfect excuse to breathe the fresh Ariège air. As a family, take a walk in the Orlu nature reserve, listen carefully and open your eyes wide, maybe you will see the marmots enjoying the heat of the sun. As for experienced hikers, you can discover the ponds of Bassiès or climb to the top of Mont Valier.
And if the mountains have conquered you, set off for several days, or even several weeks, towards Spain on the Chemin des Bonshommes (GR107), on a journey through time on the Cathar trail (GR367) or even join the ocean or the sea by taking the GR10.

Ariège: nature and sport

There are many natural and sporting activities in Ariège and if hiking is not your cup of tea, perhaps you may find amongst the rest of our recommendations the shoe that fits.
Ariège is also a land of cycling, regularly hosting stages of the Tour de France but also offering races like the Ariègeoise. Reach the city of Saint-Girons peacefully via the Green Lane or confront the Wall of Péguère, there is something for all levels and tastes.
Thrill seekers? Try paragliding, go rafting down the Ariège river, or try climbing. There are many possibilities to get your adrenaline pumping.
Summer and winter, the plateau de Beille will offer you a breathtaking panorama.
When the snow arrives, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, snowboarding or snowshoeing can be practiced in the many resorts in the region; from more family-friendly resorts like Mont-d'Olmes or Chioula, to the snowy slopes of Ax-3-domains. And after a sporty day, relax in the Couloubret baths (thermal baths).
